Three days in Montevideo and I am already overwhelmed. We have been to markets, restaurants, cathedrals, old cities, new cities, malls, more restaurants, more markets. And everywhere we go SPANISH!!!! I am picking it up pretty quick, which is to say that I can ask someone to slow down so that I can nod and act like I am understanding what they are saying more slowly. We have already been on several adventures, but the first one was the trip getting here so here is the trip, our group, and what we are up to right now.
My trip actually started on Tuesday night, after doing some home improvement projects, I started to pack. I am not a good packer. I started with two bags weighing in at a total of 150 lbs. I had to trim up my bags. There is a whole extremely interesting psycho-analysis of what I brought, why I brought it, and what that says about my personality. That is probably a waste of my time. Let's just say that after some bad adjustments as I checked in at the airport, both bags were able to board the plane with me.
The important thing is that on Tuesday afternoon I bought an IPad, but the IPad wouldn't work with my computer. So on Monday morning, I bought the software to make the IPad work with my computer, but the Software to make the IPad work with my computer wouldn't work with my computer. So, I used another computer to upload the software to my computer, which then broke my computer. Needless to say, I am not too thrilled with my computer right now. So after an all-nighter of packing, and a morning of technological mishaps. I was ready to go to South America.
The rest of the group's trip trip started Wednesday morning, after two days of classes we boarded the bus parked behind Moody Coliseum and started to head towards Dallas. I slept most of the way there but somehow this was still the longest trip to the DFW airport I have ever been on. We got off the bus, bags were checked, and we walked through security.
Dallas, of course, is the smoothest airport in the world. Our flight left a little bit late, but we seemed to be doing fine. I napped on the plane, because I am really good at sleeping on airplanes, and when we landed it was raining a little bit. When we got off the plane everyone seemed to be in a hurry. That is when I realized that my last few minutes in America wouldn't be the reflective and powerful experience that I had planned. They were going to be crazy. We ran one way to get to Terminal J, then we turned around and ran back. No one knew where we were going and no one could really help us. Too make a long story short we finally made it through the maze that is the Miami International Airport, and as we were standing in line for a flight bound for Santiago, Chile I heard them make the final boarding call... IN SPANISH. I wasn't quite ready for that, so I said goodbye to America right then and there and got on the plane, ready to learn a new language and see this place I've been dreaming about for a year now.
